Dream Job #13: Riding The Wind

Maybe I’ll work in the burgeoning wind energy business, replacing smoke-stacks with white propeller-topped heralds of the green revolution.

NEW WIND PROJECTS IN ONTARIO GOOD NEWS FOR THE PROVINCE’S ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT AND ELECTRICITY FUTURE

Ontario takes another stride towards wind industry’s vision for wind energy to provide 20% of Canada’s electricity supply by 2025

(Ottawa) – The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) welcomed today’s announcement of long-term contracts for six new wind energy projects in Ontario totaling 492 MW by Ontario’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, the Hon. George Smitherman…

“Today’s announcement is further evidence of Ontario’s leadership in promoting and developing clean renewable energy,” said Robert Hornung, President of CanWEA. “We believe that wind energy represents a tremendous opportunity for Ontario and this announcement is timely in that it will help Ontario meet its future electricity needs while also supporting significant investment and job creation at a time when the province is seeking economic stimulus.”

There’s an industry seminar in two weeks, put together by CanWEA (Canadian Wind Energy Association).  Tickets are $400!  It looks like a really valuable conference, but mainly targeting entrepreneurs and companies that want to enter the business.  I could make lots of good contacts there.  Or I could save the $400, take the attendees list, and start cold-calling.  This should be a non-issue, what’s four hundred bones compared with the chance to meet the industry’s movers and shakers in person?  Well, it’s a month’s worth of groceries for an unemployed head-of-the-family, for one thing.  I’m thinking about it.

In other news, I’m learning the power of networking.  In the past week, about five different people have said “hey, I know somebody who works in the energy industry.  Let me get you their contact info.”  And I haven’t even started asking people for this kind of help, yet!  Now at the top of my to-do list: Get good at information interviews!

Feeling light as a feather today, blowing on the breezes of change.

As far as I’ve heard, this is definitely an industry-focused conference. Not sure if my Boss is going or not, but if he does, I can shoot any info he gets your way.
I suspect that there’s going to be a lot of people looking for capital/investers there too…
